I had listened to a decorating podcast on a long drive that said ideally, there should be X number or % of items (I don’t remember exactly) that are truly unique in your home to really reflect you and your style. I mentally went through the rooms in my house and tried to count the number of pieces I owned that were one of kind. Did I have anything handmade or something I customized to make it my own? Yes, but I couldn’t even come up with a list of 5 items.
The first thing that came to mind were metal art creations I obtained at Metalpark‘s shop in NYC. These were made mostly from scrap motorcycle parts and other metal remnants to create pieces of art and each were touted to be one of kind. I bought a motorcycle (the handlebars and front wheel moves left and right! ) for my brother thinking what a perfect gift it was to have an art piece made from the very parts of one since he was such an avid rider! He kept it on his TV stand in his living room and after he passed away I now have it displayed on my TV stand next to the one I had bought myself, an R2D2 figure.

I’ve always had an underutilized crafty side and dreamed of building or buying used furniture and refinishing them. I once created my own table and bench, but got rid of those pieces when I moved out of California. I haven’t made anything since. I currently have two nightstands sitting in my garage purchased earlier this year at an estate sale with the sole purpose of refinishing them, but of course I haven’t even touched them yet…I look forward to the day I can write a post about those!
However, there is one thing immediately upon entering my home that I had created myself, more out of necessity and dissatisfaction with other purchasable options than anything, that does reflect me and my style. It is a key holder in my entryway.
I took an old sturdy red picture frame with the right dimensions and pulled off the hinged stand from the back plate. I then chose two of my Lego figurines and super glued them to the frame. I specifically picked them because they had animals (teddy bear and dog), which served as an additional place to hang keys aside from their arms. I love how this simple functional piece I made reflects my style!

How many unique pieces can you think of in your own home? Please comment with any one of kind items that you have and share a picture!

Hmmm, I couldn’t really come up with any out there “unique” stuff. I built a couple of my PC’s but that’s not really a big thing.
I did find one thing that I didn’t buy or anything; it’s a painting but this thing isn’t letting me insert a pic of it… i’ll figure it out eventually lol.
