CES 2020: Chopbox

I had actually seen this on Kickstarter several months ago, and would have liked to back it, but I have a lot of cutting boards (read this post about my favorite cutting board) along with other devices that provide most of the features this all-in-one unit has. The world’s first smart cutting board includes a very robust set of features within a block of bamboo:

  • Digital Timer that goes up to 9 hours and 59 minutes
  • 2 Knife Sharpeners (Ceramic and Diamond)
  • Scale for Weighing in grams, kilograms, ounces and pounds with the ability to tare (reset the scale to zero subtracting the weight of the bowl or plate from the measurement)
    • Bright LED light with dimmer option
  • 254nm UVC Disinfection that defaults for 5 minutes via a secondary board magnetically stored underneath that you flip over on top of the main board
    • There is a gap to insert up to 3 knives to also disinfect between the surfaces of the 2 boards
    • 20200108_110444_capture(0).jpg
  • Quick charging battery via USB in about 1 hour for a full charge that lasts 30 days
  • Grooves to catch juices
  • IPX7 Waterproof Rated, but this cannot be put into a dishwasher
  • Replaceable parts include the main cutting board and knife sharpener

I really enjoyed seeing and touching the Chopbox in person and it is, without a doubt, an impressive smart cutting board. Per a youtube review I watched, it apparently does not stain, retain smells or show significant cutting marks either.

The feature that I like the most is the UVC disinfection because until now, I was not aware that the average kitchen knife block has 9 times more germs and bacteria than the bathroom floor! I have only cleaned my knife block maybe twice since buying it years ago so I can only imagine how many germs and bacteria there is! You better believe one of the first things I’m going to do when I get home from my current trip is disinfect my knife block!

In regards to the other features of the Chopbox, here are my comments:

  • Timer: I use my Google Home on my kitchen counter as well as my oven timer and have my cell phone and Alexa as back ups.
  • Knife Sharpeners: I have a handheld one that is similar to this with 2 types of sharpeners and I don’t use it. I take my knives to be professionally sharpened because I’m too lazy to invest the time doing it myself.
  • Scale: I love my digital scale that I already have which also has tare function as well as pull out display if I’m using an extremely large bowl that covers the display, which is occasionally the case.
  • Grooves to catch juices: See my post about my favorite cutting board that has this great feature which I think supercedes the Chopbox since it holds more juice.

I like all in one devices generally, but because I love my digital scale and other chopping boards, it didn’t make sense for me to buy this. However, it may make sense for someone else, so I hope this blog post is read by that person! If that person is you and you end up buying this, please let me know!

      1. Would it be too Star Trek of me to hope for a food replicator? Hey they just came out with a self healing robot so that can’t be so farfetched.
