I’ve been put on high blood pressure medication, but my goal is to get myself off of it as quickly as possible. There are several things my primary care doctor suggested for me to do to help me lower my blood pressure outside of taking my medication daily. Many are not surprising such as eating healthier by reducing sodium, processed foods and incorporating more vegetables and exercising regularly, especially cardiovascular or aerobic exercise for approximately half an hour multiple days a week. I also know that my increased weight is a factor because I have had high blood pressure before and that was when I hit around 135 lbs. I have found that when I am at or under 125 lbs, I have not had this issue, so my goal is to lose the excess weight.
The biggest lifestyle change my doctor strongly recommended for me to lower my blood pressure was meditation, in order to address the likely main driver of the issue, which is stress. I told her I started meditating 5 minutes daily for about a month and a half prior to my annual physical visit with her and she was thrilled to hear it. When she asked how often I did it and what part of my day, with my answer being once a day usually in the mornings before I start my day, she highly encouraged me to do it at least twice a day. She told me it would be extremely beneficial if I would meditate before going to sleep since it was important to reduce the stress from the day. This is something that I am really beginning to enjoy so it is getting easier for me to ensure I make time for it.
Since I have been on my spiritual journey, my spiritual teacher happened to mention that she has been dealing with high blood pressure. She advised what natural remedies she recently implemented herself, which has resulted in a decline of her own blood pressure readings. She confirmed the results were solely from these other remedies since she implemented it for almost 2 weeks after she ran out of her prescribed medication and before she was scheduled to see her doctor again for reassessment and given another refill or prescription. Of course it is never recommended to stop taking any medications a doctor prescribes, so I will continue to take my medication and add these natural remedies to see if I can get my readings down to normal.
There are two different Essential Oil (EO) remedies that my teacher is doing, but before I get into those, I would like to touch on a few things. I am not a doctor and opt for natural solutions to potentially support and enhance western medicine remedies for myself. Since I am not a doctor or a scientist, I cannot say with any certainty that any of this is absolutely effective. I only can share that my past experiences with EOs have been beneficial and I have felt differences in my body using them. I am sharing what I do, but by no means am generically telling or recommending any of this to others since I do not know anyone’s specific situation. I recommend consulting your own doctor, doing your own research and determining what you feel is right for your own situation, before trying any natural remedies.
Please be sure to use pure essential oil. Do research on oils you decide to purchase to make sure you are putting the real stuff on your skin – not chemically altered or synthetic versions claiming to be pure EO as those can cause harm instead of good. When ingesting EOs it is especially important that you verify the purity and safety as well. These are powerful substances and must be used with caution. Check this link if you want to know which EO brand I use.
The first remedy is a topical application of a diluted mixture of EOs. Since essential oils can be irritating to the skin, it’s critical to dilute them before use.
- Carrier oil options include: jojoba oil, coconut oil and olive oil that work to nourish the skin. However, please be advised that using olive oil may alter the scent of EOs
- Mix the following EOs into a 10ml roller bottle:
12 drops Helichrysum
12 drops Ylang Ylang
8 drops Cassia
8 drops Frankincense
8 drops Marjoram
Then top it off with a carrier oil. This blend may be applied at least twice a day and more as needed to the bottoms of your feet, carotid arteries, back of neck, wrists, along the breastbone, and massaged over heart.
The second remedy is ingesting Yarrow Pom twice a day internally by placing 2 drops in empty vegetable capsules. There are premade capsules that may be purchased, but I chose to buy the oil and make my own capsules since I plan to apply this oil topically over my heart area as well as my face since this also is very beneficial to beautify skin. And as an added bonus, this amazing oil is supposed to also help increase metabolism and provides immune and nervous system support.
I have done some of my own research online and found that inhaling Neroli is also known to lower blood pressure. I have a diluted bottle of this oil and I will also try inhaling several days in a row to see if I notice any decreases in my readings.
Feel free to review research conducted on some of these EOs per the links provided below:
Cassia
Helichrysum
Marjoram
Yarrow
Ylang Ylang
*10/10/2022 UPDATE: After further research, I have created a modified aroma roller bottle that includes Neroli and added the following to a 10ml roller bottle:
4ml diluted bottle of Neroli
5 drops of Cedarwood
12 drops Lavender
12 drops Marjoram
12 drops of Ylang Ylang
Topped with fractionated coconut oil
I plan to roll this under my nose sporadically throughout the day to inhale. Other essential oils that are supposed to support lowering blood pressure include: Clary Sage, Lemon and Lime. I do not have any of these oils currently and plan to buy them in the future.
