Mercury Sign

Per my What Does Mars Really Have to do with Men? blog post, Mercury represents how you communicate with others, think, learn, problem solve and organize. Per Cafe Astrology, where you can go to get your own birth chart, it says Mercury represents communication, Cartesian and logical spirit. I looked up Cartesian since I was unfamiliar with the term and web search results indicated that it refers to the mind being entirely separate from the body in a way that even if the body dies, existence still continues without the body.

My Mercury is in Scorpio and the way I’d generically describe my communication style is that I am more so a listener than a talker and that I much prefer deeper conversations, detesting small talk. Because talking, especially around people I am not close to, strangers or public speaking gives me anxiety, I am a much better listener and therefore pay attention to more minute details of what people say or even what they may not be saying outright.

According to my natal/birth chart from Café Astrology this is the description the report provides:
She is extremely observant and astute, always reading between the lines and looking for the real meaning behind things. Passionate in speech, excellent at strategy. Natural psychologist.

It is my nature to observe and I do enjoy people watching a lot. Digging deeper and finding things below the surface is also something that I find myself naturally drawn to do. However, I would be surprised if I am considered passionate in my daily speech since I tend to hold back my emotions. I have been told that I have a very calming voice, which I attribute to the fact that I try to keep my emotions in check and that strikes me as being the opposite of passionate. I also don’t think I am good with strategy. I thrive when I am given clear instructions on what to do and the task is very detail oriented. I find myself struggling when I am required to come up with my own strategy on how to deal with problems or situations. Lastly, yes, I do believe I am a natural psychologist simply because since I was young, many people have sought me out to talk to, have me listen and help them through whatever challenges they were facing. I have been called on a couple occasions, someone’s “personal psychologist”.

As indicated in my What Does Mars Really Have to do with Men? post, I will also go over another person’s chart, referred to as Kali, who is born on the same month and day as I was, but different year and location to offer a comparison of how two people with the same birth day, can be vastly different despite both being Scorpios. According to Kali’s natal/birth chart from Café Astrology her Mercury is in Sagittarius and this is the description the report provides:
Enthusiastic, humorous, and sometimes moralistic. She has strong opinions, and will often be eager to share them! Democrat, philosopher, tolerant, respectful of laws. Interested in foreign places and learning more languages. Believes that everything teaches you something.

Interestingly enough, both Kali and I have some similar aspects with our Mercuries which I’ll also touch on. An astrological aspect is when two or more planets or other astrological points, like the Lilith or Midheaven, make a specific angle to each other. I am not well-versed on the nuances of different aspects to be able to do any justice to describe them to anyone else so recommend further research if more information is desired.

I have a Conjunction between Mercury and Uranus and Kali has a Trine between Mercury and Uranus but the descriptions from both our Café Astrology natal chart reports are the same:
She is perspicacious, ingenious. She binds intelligence and originality together with genius. She likes literature, especially fiction. She is spontaneous in her friendships and knows how to turn situations around positively.

I had to look up the word perspicacious since I had never come across it before and it is defined on Onelook.com as able to judge quickly and correctly what people and situations are really like. Only speaking for myself, not for Kali, I do find myself judging new people immediately. I have found that there are people I automatically dislike, but am not even sure why. In those instances, sometimes it takes me years to discover why I feel that way. I do love reading fiction and more recently writing it as well. I don’t consider myself spontaneous in my friendships as I don’t tend to make new friends easily or quickly and I don’t act spontaneous either, so can’t agree with this part. As for turning situations positively, I also struggle with this description simply because I have such a negative mindset to begin with that it is hard to see me being the positive one to change things around for the better.

In addition to that, our reports from Café Astrology indicates we both have an Opposition between Mercury and Lilith:
Can be provocative in speech or communications, often challenging and contradicting, and seeing the flaws of a situation. This might be someone who holds back her sensuality.

Once again commenting only on my own personal experiences related to this description, I can say the following: If I am truly comfortable with the people I am speaking with, then I can be provocative in my communications with them. I do curse a lot when I talk and won’t hesitate to talk about taboo subjects that most would cringe, blush or purposefully avoid talking about. When I am in a rare position of feeling confident about something, I won’t hesitate to challenge others. I have been told I am contradicting to what I had said previously, but usually don’t even remember that I had said something before. I can only guess that I change my perspective or opinion on things and that is why I am contradictory. Also due to my negative nature, I am the type to look at a situation and see where things have the potential of going wrong. As for the sensuality piece, yes I have done this a whole lot because I feel it is inappropriate and that I would be negatively judged if I let out my true depth of my sensuality. This is an area that I am working on being confident about letting out because I feel I am not my true self when I hold this huge part of myself back.

Lastly, the Cafe Astrology report shows we also both have a Conjunction between Mercury and our Midheaven:
She likes to have her own ideas about things, to form an opinion and think over the problems it poses. She is an intellectual.

When thinking about this in regards to how I personally am, I do prefer to have plenty of time to mull things over so that I can come to my own conclusions. I also have been described as being intelligent and having the capacity to use that to benefit difficult situations.

The descriptions provided in the birth chart report was very succinct compared to the previous aspects, but like the others I already reviewed, I can’t say 100% describes me accurately and there are a couple things that I don’t agree with.
