“Over 4th of July weekend, I stayed at Gi’s house and slept over 8 hours daily for the first time in years!” Grace of Graceful Purpose said. She, like me, is a light sleeper who usually wakes up early and can struggle with getting a good night’s rest. When I asked her what she thought might have contributed to her sleeping well at my home, she replied, “I can’t pin-point exactly what it was. Maybe it was:
A. doTERRA Bergamot plug-in mister
B. Earthing/grounding mat on the bed
C. Purple mattress
D. Blackout curtains
E. How she Feng Shui’d the space
F. EMF harmonizers
G. Humidifier
H. Foam Pillow”
I shared with Grace all the various things I mindfully put in place to optimize the guest room for sleep and gave her information and links to some of the products that she specifically asked about. Ultimately, she surmised, “It was probably all of the above, but I’m forever grateful for the 3 days that my body got to rest, recalibrate and wake up with great energy. Forever grateful!”
I’ve had several friends and family say similar when they’ve stayed at my home and it fills my heart with joy that they consider a visit with me to be rejuvenating. It is one of the highest compliments I could receive. And like Grace, many have asked about specific products that they’ve found in my home so they could purchase it for themselves so I created this blog post to share my tips on how to set up your bedroom for optimal sleep.(As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases made from links below)
1. Temperature Control
- Thermostat: My house conveniently has different zones allowing guests to set their own preferred temperature without impacting the rest of the house. I make a point to set the temp to their preference and ensure they know how to adjust the Nest thermostat on their own.
- Cooling Mattress: I invested in a Purple mattress, with its GelFlex grid system to allow air to circulate for a cooler sleep experience while offering unique pressure relieving support to the body.
- Cooling Bedsheets: When living in Houston, I discovered Sheex, known for its cooling and moisture-wicking blend of polyester and spandex that breathes 50% better than traditional cotton, making the duvet cover set including pillowcases particularly suitable for hot sleepers or those in humid climates. The smooth stretchy feel of the Sheex fitted sheet (commissions earned) is also ideal to maximize the flexible grid support of my queen Purple mattress.
- Cooling Blanket: I offer guests a Hush weighted blanket (using my referral link gives you a $35 discount and gives me the same; it is a win-win!) with a bamboo cover that regulates temperature. My twin guest bed uses Hush sheets made of 100% organic viscose bamboo, known for its breathability and moisture-wicking capabilities. Plus the Iced 2.0 finish is designed to draw heat away from the body.
2. Lighting
- Blackout Curtains: Blocking light from windows is achieved by installing blackout curtains and a wrap-around curtain rod (commissions earned). They also do double duty by helping control temperature from the window.
- Eye mask: I collected several new sealed kits from international flights that contain eye masks that I offer guests for those who are extremely light sensitive.
- Night Lights: A dual purpose multi-plug outlet with adjustable warm-toned night light (commissions earned) is less disruptive to melatonin production and also offers fast charging of electronics via two USB A and one USB C ports.
3. Bed Comfort
- Quality Bedframe: I chose a lower height sturdy bed frame (commissions earned) to accommodate the Purple mattress’ 11.5″ profile height to ensure ease of getting in and out of the bed without any squeaking.
- Pillows: My best friend introduced me to a memory foam cervical pillow (commissions earned) to support the neck and spine that accommodates all sleeping types from back, side to stomach sleepers that several guests found comfortable.
- Blanket/Comforter: If the Hush weighted blanket I recommended in the Temperature Control section above is not for you, consider this affordable yet cozy comforter (commissions earned) that is suitable for all seasons. The box stitching ensures the fill stays even and the tabs at the corner ensures the comforter stays in place within the duvet cover.
4. Room Ambiance
- Humidifier: Living in a desert, a humidifier (commissions earned) to maintain optimal humidity levels (30%-50%) in the bedroom is crucial. I purposefully chose one that is made to work with essential oils so relaxation can be further promoted with aromatherapy at the same time. Be careful using an existing one you own as many humidifiers can break and cease to function if they are not made to be used with essential oils.
- Air Purifier: I have a few different brands of air purifiers that I use in my home to keep the air clean and limit pet dander. Vitesy Natede is the purifier in the room with a washable filter that allows a plant to be inserted into the pot section. Coway (commissions earned)is an effective yet affordable and wirecutter approved option that has 3 stage filtration. Rabbit Air (commissions earned)uses a six stage filtration and is the most expensive option that I use in my open living/ dining/ kitchen to really tackle pet and food odors.
- Aromatherapy: Many people find specifics scents enhance their ability to relax. I personally prefer lavender and use doTERRA’s essential oils and plug-in diffusers.
5. EMF Reduction
- Grounding Mat: I set up an earthing sleep mat horizontally across the bed at the foot of the mattress to ground the body which is conducive to sleep.
- Somavedic: Use a device with EMF shielding technology to reduce the effects of electronic stress which many, including myself, claim to enhance their sleep. Because these units emit a light, I keep it just outside the bedrooms, which don’t impair their effectivity since the harmonizing field extends up to 100 feet, penetrating walls. Get 10% off a Somavedic device using my referral link.
- Shungite: This carbon-rich mineral, is believed to absorb and reflect electromagnetic waves, particularly in the 2–12 GHz range, which covers common EMF sources like Wi-Fi and some cellular signals. I placed a plate on the nightstand for guests who want to charge their cell phone nearby.
NOTE: I do NOT recommend buying any crystals on Amazon because I question whether they are genuine. Instead I recommend Heaven and Earth Jewelry website to purchase crystals if you don’t have a local shop you can trust. - Electronics: An easy tip is to keep electronic devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops away from the bed and ideally outside of the room. It is also recommended to turn off Wi-Fi at night.
6. Noise Control
- Earplugs: I always offer my guests a set of new earplugs for their use, which are part of the eyemask set I mentioned earlier.
- Flooring: Because I have vinyl plank flooring, I have a small customized area rug made of Flor carpet tiles to absorb noise and minimize sound transmission in the room.
If you struggle with sleep, I encourage you to consider implementing some of these elements to create a sleep-friendly environment to enhance your overall quality of sleep. If you end up incorporating any of my suggestions I would love to hear if they have benefited your sleep.
