First let me debunk the biggest myth I only learned myself recently. Pores do NOT open and close with the use of hot and cold water respectively because our pores do not have muscles to open or close. When you use hot water or get a steam facial, what is actually happening is the sebum inside your pores is easier to clear out because it is loosened by the heat, not because your pores actually open up. Once your pores are cleared, your pores appear smaller.
As eluded to in the previous paragraph, you cannot reduce the size of your pores, you may minimize their appearance though! Like most other physical things about you, your pore size is highly dependent on genetics. Those who are more fair-skinned are likely to have less noticeable pores. People with darker and/or oily complexions tend to have more visible pores. In addition to skin tone, other things may cause pores to appear darker and larger such as excess sebum, dead skin cells and makeup that was not properly removed. This is why proper cleansing and regular exfoliation practices are key! Please read my post on How to Properly Wash Your Face.
Another thing you should be aware of is, unfortunately, your pores may look bigger as you age. Since our skin loses collagen as we get older, which helps keep pores tight, our pores start to relax, loosen and stretch. Take note that pores may lose its shape if you pick or squeeze pimples so please fight that urge to pick at your face! I personally know how hard that can be!
Aside from properly cleansing your face, you may opt to use primers or mattifying gels to give your skin the appearance of a smooth almost pore-less look.

Thank you for pouring all that knowledge out. Lol see what I did there? 😜
I’m thankful to never have had major skin issues but I do take heed in regard to proper skin care.
