Because of the way I travel, I don’t have a dedicated salon where I get my hair done. I have a couple regular salons I go to if I happen to be in Los Angeles and Houston, but hadn’t found one in Vegas…until now.
I was getting annoyed with my heavy long hair and itching for a change. I typically will go through the same cycle of cutting my hair about shoulder length, miss my long hair and let it grow out, then get tired of the long hair and cut it again. This time, I wanted something different, a more drastic change than simply cutting off a lot of length. I debated a back shaved style, but quickly moved on when I remembered getting one in college that I hated and had a terrible “grow out” transition period. After searching a ton of short hairstyles, I decided on an asymmetrical bob style, but not the typical short in the back long on the front style. I wanted it asymmetrical from left to right! I thought that would be funky and edgy enough to satisfy my desire for something drastically different, but was admittedly scared. Was it going to be too funky? And what if the stylist I ended up going to messes it up – it’s not a typical style to begin with and blending the lines on this cut could make the difference between “edgy” or “edward scissorhands chop job”!
I wasn’t comfortable going to the same cheap $20/haircut where I last got a simple trim a couple months ago in Vegas for this unusual cut. After reading several reviews, a solid 5 star rating on Yelp led me to book a consultation with Lori at Pump Salon. I must admit I was relieved and happy to see Lori was Asian as she would likely be better suited to work with my naturally jet black stubborn straight Asian hair. I came prepared with 3 pictures of the asymmetrical bob I was trying to achieve and bluntly told her my super lazy hair maintenance routine, which consisted of wash and go – no blow drying, no styling, no products. She spent about 30 minutes checking out my hair and talking to me about what I wanted, which she felt I could totally pull off even given my habit of not styling my hair. We also discussed a potential color job in next couple months that could work with this new cut knowing I’d probably want to even it out to symmetrical cut before the end of the year. Lori put me at ease and got me excited for my new look, so I booked an appointment 2 days later and even opted to do the deep conditioning treatment add-on.
After a quick chop job to remove length, I was seated under the heater with the deep conditioning treatment in my hair and red wine in my hand.

Lori took her time and checked in with me as the cut was progressing and made tweaks per my request along the way until I was satisfied with the cut. About 2 hours later, I emerged from the salon with my extra shiny new asymmetrical bob cut.

I’d love to hear what you think (good or bad) of my new hairstyle! Do I actually pull this off?!

Five stars!
