CES 2020: A Smart Doggie Door Upgrade

This wi-fi enabled smart door opener for sliding glass doors allows people to safely and securely open and close the door from anywhere providing access as needed using a mobile app or integrated with smart speakers, cameras and sensors. Wayzn is installed near the track of the door, within minutes, using strong removable adhesive tape and system of adapters and spacers so there is no damage to the door also allowing it to be easily moved to another door. It plugs into a standard outlet for power.  The unit also acts like a metal security rod which prevents the door from being opened without authorization.

Wayzn weighs ~6 lbs. It fits 5, 6, 8 foot doors and provides a 8-18 inch opening.  The dimensions for the 6 foot door are~ 2″W x 4″H x18″. The 8ft model is ~24″ long. The provided opening is pretty narrow, which is why it was initially launched on Indiegogo as a “better dog door”.  Due to the limited opening size it is more useful to let pets in and out, opening the door for ventilation purposes as well as letting delivery people drop in packages. One thing to keep in mind with this is if there is a secondary screen door, that must be left open to allow pets in and out.  That is unless the dog knows how to open the screen door, which I have seen some dogs actually do! The unit pivots out of the way to open the door fully which is more practical for people passing through.  Precise control features include motion detection, auto-open, scheduling, width adjustment and sleep mode.

For pets, there is a motion detection setting that sends notifications via the app.  At that point, using a connected camera will assist with determining whether to open/close the door for the pet.

Per the handout from the booth, Artificial Intelligence is used to measure and calibrate itself to the door’s size and characteristics continually adapting to the changes in the door’s rolling resistance over time. There are four types of sensors that constantly monitor the area for activity, check for obstruction and determine exact position and orientation. There is a separate, dedicated microprocessor that reads sensor data and interprets it in context to take appropriate action.  The security architecture avoids passing secret information over the internet and uses a combination of HMAC, SHA-2 and nonces to ensure commands are valid and authentic.

Getting this in your home requires paying a $50 deposit to reserve one and waiting approximately 3 months since they are still catching up with previous orders.  The $50 deposit will be applied to the the $399 cost, of which, the balance will be requested within 1-2 months.  Shipping cost within the US is estimated at ~$29.  If after receiving it, you change your mind, there is a 30 day refund policy. There is a 1 year warranty period.

I am still debating whether to invest in this.  If I had a dog, I would seriously consider buying this for the convenience of letting it in and out without getting out of bed or going back home! Here are some things that I’m taking into consideration before I make my decision.

  • An internet camera should be used with this when controlling remotely, to see the door and determine whether to open/close it.
  • It is not Gooogle, Alexa, Zigbee or Z-Wave compatible.  (They are looking into these.)
  • Cannot be configured/operated without the app. Cannot be accessed/controlled with a web browser.
  • If there is a power outage when the door is open, it would remain open until the power comes back on.

Would you buy this?
